BERLINO – Venerdì 2 e sabato 3 settembre, al Moabiter Stadtgarten di Berlino, è andato in scena Unspeakable Community di Grace Euna Kim

Il pubblico arriva nel piccolo parco accanto al Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik esattamente all’ora del tramonto. Gli astanti aspettano che succeda qualcosa, anche se il dubbio che lo spettacolo sia già iniziato è diffuso. All’improvviso una “ragazza del pubblico”, come in una commedia di Pirandello, inizia ad esprimere le sue emozioni senza potersi fermare. Per alcune delle persone che assistono allo spettacolo è difficile guardare impassibili qualcuno che mostra i propri sentimenti in modo così plateale, ma nessuno si muove. Tutti cercano di capire cosa sta per accadere.

Improvvisamente, dall’altra parte del parco, un personaggio bizzarro inizia a manifestare il suo nervosismo con suoni forti e movimenti instabili. All’inizio sembra essere qualcuno estraneo alla performance, ma quando si avvicina e inizia a muoversi tra gli spettatori, risulta evidente che faccia parte della “unspeakable community”. I due personaggi creano un contrasto interessante perché il tremore che attraversa il corpo della ragazza è in netta antitesi ai suoni penetranti emessi dell’altro personaggio.

A poco a poco, come in un domino, sempre più performer vengono contagiati dalla stessa esplosione di emozioni. Ai due spettatori che sin dall’inizio si rivelano protagonisti dello show, si aggiunge prima un’altra performer, dall’espressione più dolce, e poi altri due che, con la loro forte presenza, catturano l’attenzione di tutto il pubblico. Poi, a intervalli di tempo sempre più brevi, si uniscono a loro anche il resto dei membri della “unspeakable community”.

Ogni artista, con la sua personalità, cerca di esprimere i propri sentimenti con passi e gesti che nascono dalle contrazioni che le emozioni producono. I corpi, che si muovono reagendo a questo insieme di sensazioni, sembrano invitare gli spettatori a unirsi al coro di emozioni contrastanti. Molte persone del pubblico reagiscono a questa provocazione e iniziano a provare sensazioni simili a quelle che manifestano i performer.

Lo spettacolo si chiude dopo la catarsi che segue un climax liberatorio. La comunità ora ha sperimentato modi diversi per esprimere ed elaborare emozioni profonde, rompendo i limiti strutturali della lingua parlata.

Unspeakable Community è un invito interessante e originale a vivere un momento surreale di follia e libertà. In questa performance immersiva gli artisti spingono le persone a riflettere sul proprio modo di comunicare, di esprimere emozioni e pensieri.

È lodevole il coraggio della coreografa coreano-americana di dar vita a una performance che offre un’esperienza intensa e inaspettata, fuori dagli schemi e con un effetto profondo e curativo.

BERLINO – On the 2nd and 3rd of September, the performance Unspeakable Community by Grace Euna Kim was on at the Moabiter Stadtgarten in Berlin

The audience arrives at sunset in the small park next to the Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik. All the people wait for something to happen, not sure if the performance has started already, when suddenly one young woman in the audience, like in a Pirandello play, begins to express her emotions without being able to stop. For many people in the audience, it’s hard to see someone expressing their feelings in such a dramatic way surrounded by strangers, but nobody moves, everybody tries to understand what comes next.

Suddenly, on the other side of the park, a bizarre character starts expressing his nervous emotions with loud sounds and erratic movements. At first, it seems to be someone unrelated to the performance, but when he approaches and starts moving among the spectators, it’s evident that he is part of the ‘unspeakable community’. Both characters create an interesting contrast because the contractions that go through the girl’s body make an effect of dissociation with the penetrating sound of the other character.

Little by little, like in a domino game, more performers get contaminated by the same explosion of emotions. Joining the first two characters, another performer with a sweeter expression appears, followed by two others who, with sharp roars, capture the whole audience’s attention. Then, in short intervals, the rest of the unspeakable community members reveal themselves.

Each one, with their own personality, tries to express their feelings with movements that come from the contractions that their emotions produce. Their bodies, reacting to a bunch of sensations, seem to be an invitation for the spectators to join them in a choir of mixed emotions and absurdness. Many people in the audience react to this provocation and start to experience the same sensations that the artists feel.

The show reaches closure after the catharsis that follows the liberating climax. The community now has experienced different ways to express and process deep emotions, breaking the limits of spoken language.

The Unspeakable Community is an interesting and original call to live an absurd and surreal moment of madness and freedom. In this immersive performance, the artists provoke the people to reflect on their own way to communicate and express emotions and thoughts.
It’s very praiseworthy the courage of the Korean-American choreographer to offer an intense and unexpected experience that is out of the scheme and that has a deep and healing effect.
