Deutschen Tanzpreis 2024
BERLINO – La coreografa, danzatrice e regista Sasha Waltz riceverà il Deutschen Tanzpreis 2024 (Premio Tedesco della Danza 2024), consistente in 20.000 euro, per il suo appeal internazionale, il suo impegno nella scena della danza indipendente e, soprattutto, per il suo talento artistico unico e trasversale. La cerimonia di premiazione avrà luogo nell’ambito di un gala di danza, il 12 ottobre 2024 presso l’Aalto Theater Essen, organizzato dalla Dachverband Tanz Deutschland.
Johannes-Passion
In occasione dell’apertura del Festival di Pasqua di Salisburgo il pubblico internazionale ha appena avuto l’opportunità di assistere alla prima assoluta della Johannes-Passion (Passione di Giovanni) sulla musica di Johann Sebastian Bach. Il pubblico berlinese potrà assistere a Beethoven 7 presso il Radialsystem e a Sacre, coreografia in tre parti sulla musica di Igor Stravinskij, presso l’Haus der Berliner Festspiele dal 27 al 30 giugno 2024.
Le motivazioni del premio della giuria
Come ballerina, coreografa e regista la cui vita e centro di lavoro è a Berlino, la sua arte ha svolto un ruolo chiave nello sviluppo della danza contemporanea dall’inizio degli anni ’90. Ha continuato a sviluppare la sua inconfondibile firma coreografica e il suo approccio estetico fino ad oggi. Sasha Waltz è indiscutibilmente una delle artiste più rinomate nel campo della danza in Germania, sia a livello nazionale che internazionale. […] In stretta collaborazione con il suo compagno di vita e di lavoro Jochen Sandig, ha ripetutamente aperto nuovi spazi per la danza. Ha fondato il Sophiensæle (1996) e il Radialsystem (2006), e ha conquistato un nuovo pubblico per la danza a livello nazionale e internazionale. Con SW&G è stata creata una compagnia che permette all’artista di impegnarsi in importanti collaborazioni internazionali nonché di sperimentare incoraggiando la creatività dei ballerini.
BIO
Sasha Waltz ha studiato danza e coreografia ad Amsterdam e New York. Insieme a Jochen Sandig ha fondato nel 1993 la compagnia Sasha Waltz & Guest. È cofondatrice del Sophiensæle (1996) e del Radialsystem (2006) a Berlino. Dal 2000 al 2004 è stata membro della direzione della Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. Per la stagione 2019/20 Sasha Waltz ha assunto la direzione del Balletto di Stato di Berlino insieme a Johannes Öhman. Lo sviluppo di forme innovative e interdisciplinari di performance e creazione è un punto focale del suo lavoro artistico che spazia da pezzi coreografici conosciuti a livello internazionale come la trilogia Travelogue (1993-95) o Körper (2000) all’Opera coreografata (Dido & Aeneas, 2005) a progetti di dialogo basati sulla ricerca (Dialogues 09 – New Museum). Un momento centrale del suo attuale lavoro coreografico è la fusione tra coreografia e musica (tra cui SYM-PHONIE MMXX, 2022 e Beethoven 7, 2023). Nella primavera del 2024 Sasha Waltz si è dedicata al 300° anniversario della prima esecuzione della Passione secondo Giovanni di Johann Sebastian Bach (BWV 245). La produzione dell’Opéra de Dijon in coproduzione con la SW&G e il Théâtre des Champs-Élysées ha aperto il Festival di Pasqua di Salisburgo il 22.03.24.
In C
Allo stesso tempo, Sasha Waltz è impegnata nella trasmissione della conoscenza della danza e della danza come mezzo di comprensione sociale e socio-politica. Nel 2021 ha creato In C, sull’omonima composizione di Terry Riley, eseguita con successo a livello nazionale e internazionale, e divenuta un sistema di apprendimento. L’opera è composta da 53 figure coreografiche registrate in video tutorial, che consentono un facile trasferimento delle conoscenze. Progetti In C partecipativi, diversificati, internazionali e sostenibili, formati di workshop e strutture sempre nuove sono nati in tutto il mondo.
Sasha Waltz è membro dell’Accademia delle arti di Berlino dal giugno 2013. Nel 2021 è stata nominata “Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres” dal Ministero della Cultura francese.
Deutschen Tanzpreis 2024
The choreographer, dancer and director Sasha Waltz will be awarded the Deutschen Tanzpreis 2024 (German Dance Prize 2024), which is endowed with €20,000, for her international appeal, her commitment to the structures of the independent dance scene and, above all, for her artistically unique and cross-genre kind of work. The award ceremony will take place as part of a dance gala on Saturday, October 12th at 7 p.m. in the Aalto Theater Essen – organized by the Dachverband Tanz Deutschland.
Johannes-Passion
At the opening of the Salzburg Easter Festival, the international audience just had the opportunity to experience the premiere of the Johannes-Passion, Waltz’s latest work on music by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Berlin audience can attend at Beethoven 7 in the Radialsystem in the coming days and a revival of the three-part evening Sacre to the music of Igor Stravinsky at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele from June 27th to 30th, 2024.
The jury’s reasons for the award
As a dancer, choreographer and director whose life and work center is in Berlin, her art has played a key role in shaping the development of contemporary dance since the beginning of the 1990s. She has continued to develop her unmistakable choreographic signature and her aesthetic approach to this day. Sasha Waltz is undisputedly one of the most renowned artists in the field of dance in Germany, both nationally and internationally. […] In close collaboration with her life and work partner Jochen Sandig, she has repeatedly opened up new spaces for dance, including by founding the Sophiensæle (1996) and the Radialsystem (2006), and has gained new audiences for dance nationally and internationally . With ‘Sasha Waltz & Guests’, a company structure was created that enables the artist to engage in major international collaborations as well as to experiment with new forms and in which the creativity of the company’s dancers is also encouraged.

Sasha Waltz studied dance and choreography in Amsterdam and New York. Together with Jochen Sandig she founded the company Sasha Waltz & Guests in 1993. She is co-founder of the Sophiensæle (1996) and the Radialsystem (2006) in Berlin. From 2000-2004 she was a member of the management of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. For the 2019/20 season, Sasha Waltz took over the directorship of the Berlin State Ballet together with Johannes Öhman. The development of innovative, cross-disciplinary forms of performance and creation is an important focus of her artistic work, in which she ranges from internationally known dance pieces such as the Travelogue trilogy (1993-95) or Körper (2000) to choreographed operas (e.g. Dido & Aeneas, 2005) to research-based dialogue projects (e.g. Dialogues 09 – New Museum). A central moment of her current choreographic work is the fusion of choreography and music (including SYM-PHONIE MMXX, 2022 and Beethoven 7, 2023). In spring 2024, Sasha Waltz dedicated herself to the 300th anniversary of the premiere of Johann Sebastian Bach’s John Passion (BWV 245). The Opéra de Dijon production in co-production with Sasha Waltz & Guests and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées opened the Salzburg Easter Festival on March 22, 2024.
In C
At the same time, Sasha Waltz is committed to the transfer of dance knowledge and dance as a medium of social and socio-political understanding. In 2021 she developed the work In C, based on Terry Riley’s revolutionary and open composition of the same name, which has since not only been successfully performed nationally and internationally, but has also developed into its own system with a growing community. The work consists of 53 choreographic figures recorded in video tutorials, which enable easy transfer of knowledge. Participatory, diverse, international and sustainable In C projects, workshop formats and ever new structures have emerged and are emerging from the material around the world.
Sasha Waltz has been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts since June 2013. In 2021 she was appointed “Commandeur de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Ministry of Culture.
