STOCCARDA – In questo periodo, la speranza sembra morire proprio come il famigerato cigno. Ma le difficoltà hanno sempre dotato Eric Gauthier – per restare fedeli alla metafora – di grandi ali. Soprattutto da quando la sua ultima idea è riuscita a ottenere il supporto di cui aveva bisogno per rianimare il mondo della danza, gli organizzatori e i suoi supporter. Nel corso di una sola settimana, infatti, l’idea di Gauthier si è trasformata in una produzione: The Dying Swans Project.
Il progetto dei cigni morenti
L’obiettivo di Eric Gauthier era quello di dare una nuova speranza durante questo lockdown – non solo ai “cigni morenti” della Gauthier Dance, ma a 64 artisti provenienti da diversi campi della danza, della coreografia, della musica e del cinema. Questo è il progetto così com’è stato approvato: 16 coreografi, 8 donne e 8 uomini, creeranno ciascuno un solo di danza per i 16 membri della Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart. Nel progetto sono comprese anche le colonne sonore originali e le riprese dei 16 brani.
La cultura è inarrestabile!
Il risultato saranno 16 nuove creazioni, firmate da altrettanti coreografi, con un messaggio forte: la cultura è inarrestabile! Il progetto è concepito in due fasi: la prima sotto forma di videoclip, disponibile da venerdì 16 aprile 2021 alle ore 10:00 su Theaterhaus Stuttgart YouTube channel , su Instagram channel of Gauthier Dance nonché sulla 3sat media library. Per la seconda fase, è prevista una versione live del progetto. Invece di eseguire semplicemente i soli selezionati nelle sedi di co-produzione, ci sarà anche The Dying Swans Live Experience!
Lo spettacolo è ispirato al pezzo che ha dato il nome al progetto: l’iconico assolo di Michel Fokine La morte del cigno.
La coreografia originale giocherà un ruolo importante sotto molti “aspetti”. Dopotutto, Gauthier vuole rendere omaggio alla storia del balletto – pur con un approccio decisamente contemporaneo. Pertanto, non solo verranno mostrati i 16 soli completi di The Dying Swans Project, dal vivo o in un film, ma un membro della Gauthier Dance indosserà anche le punte, per portare in vita la storica coreografia sul palco. Eric Gauthier ha anche sollecitato brevi dichiarazioni video di famose ballerine come Polina Semionova e Diana Vishneva, le quali racconteranno cosa significa per loro questo pezzo. Il programma è completato da approfondimenti documentari di Rainhardt Albrecht-Herz, il quale ha seguito lo straordinario processo di prove con la telecamera. La serata sarà ospitata da Eric Gauthier come maestro di cerimonie e presentatore di Dying Swan.
The Dying Swans Live Experience sarà presentato in anteprima il 22 maggio 2021 al Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele.
La vendita anticipata dei biglietti per i quattro spettacoli del 22 e 23 maggio 2021 inizierà a metà aprile al festival box office. Numerose altre esibizioni seguiranno al Theaterhaus Stuttgart, nei festival partner e in tournée in tutto il mondo.

These days, hope seems to die just like the proverbial swan. But difficulties have always – to stay with the metaphor – given wings to Eric Gauthier. Especially since his latest baby had what it took to excite the dance scene, organisers and business partners alike. So thoroughly, in fact, that in the course of just one week, his idea turned into a confirmed production: The Dying Swans Project.
The Dying Swans Project
Eric Gauthier’s aim was to open up a new perspective during lockdown – not only for the „dying swans“ of Gauthier Dance but for a total of 64 artists from the fields of dance, choreography, music and film. And that was the plan: 16 choreographers, 8 women and 8 men, will each create one dance solo for the 16 members of the Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart. The commissions also include the original scores and the filming of the 16 pieces.
Culture is unstoppable!
The result: 16 new creations in 16 different choreographic signatures conveying one strong message: Culture is unstoppable! Accordingly, the project is conceived in two phases: first in form of video clips, available from Friday, April 16, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. on the Theaterhaus Stuttgart YouTube channel and the Instagram channel of Gauthier Dance as well as the 3sat media library.
But there’s more to come. Since January, Eric Gauthier has fleshed out his plans for a live version of the project. Instead of simply performing selected solos at the co-producing venues, there will now be The Dying Swans Live Experience!
The stage show is inspired by the piece that gave the project its name: Michel Fokine’s iconic solo The Dying Swan.
The original will play an important part in many „respects“. After all, Gauthier aims at nothing less than a bow to ballet history – in the form of a decidedly contemporary appropriation. Therefore, not only will the complete 16 solos from The Dying Swans Project be shown, either live or on film, but a member of Gauthier Dance will also put on pointe shoes to bring the historic choreography to life on stage. In addition, Eric Gauthier has solicited short video statements from famous ballerinas such as Polina Semionova and Diana Vishneva, telling what this piece means to them. The programme is complemented by documentary insights from Rainhardt Albrecht-Herz, who accompanied the truly extraordinary rehearsal process at Gauthier Dance with the camera. Eric Gauthier will be master of ceremonies and Dying Swan explainer.
The Dying Swans Live Experience will premiere on May 22, 2021, at the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele.
Advance ticket sales for the four performances on May 22 and 23, 2021, will begin in mid-April at the festival box office. Numerous other performances will follow at Theaterhaus Stuttgart, at the partner festivals and on tour worldwide.
