BERLINO – Il 22 e il 23 agosto presso il Radyalsistem, nell’ambito del Tanz im August 2023, Taoufiq Izeddiou ha presentato Hmadcha حمادشة.
Il titolo dello spettacolo si rifà al nome di una confraternita sufi del XVII secolo. Il coreografo marocchino, ispirandosi alle feste ascetiche di questa setta, propone un pezzo intriso di immagini e gestualità a metà strada tra il tribale e il mistico.
Il pezzo inizia con il rumore del mare e un uomo che, muovendo in modo sinuoso la propria schiena, rievoca il moto delle onde. Quando al suono dell’acqua si aggiungono le percussioni, il performer inizia a saltellare in modo ritmico e ripetitivo, cambiando spesso fronte. Ad un certo punto il movimento diventa più ampio e sembra riprodurre i passi di un combattimento. A breve distanza temporale, uno dopo l’altro, guadagnano la scena altri sette danzatori. Sulla sinistra del palco, un muro di luce attrae i performer che vi si avvicinano con le braccia alzate come in una preghiera. Poi torna a sentirsi l’infrangersi delle onde e con esse iniziano a diversificarsi anche i movimenti degli 8 fratelli che in alcuni momenti si riuniscono per ripetere ossessivamente lo stesso movimento.
Un cambio, che forse simbolizza anche la liberazione da religione e false credenze, avviene quando la musica di una chitarra elettrica trasforma la danza in giri vorticosi che vengono eseguiti prima con le dita intrecciate e le braccia tese davanti al petto e poi con le mani sciolte e le braccia aperte. I performer si abbracciano ripetutamente e, quando inizia Metamorphosis di Philip Glass, sul palco appaiono dei quadrati di luce all’interno dei quali i danzatori si posizionano rivolgendo i palmi delle mani verso l’alto.
Segue un momento in cui si sentono le voci dei performer come in un lamento. Tutti camminano all’indietro, con le spalle rivolte verso il muro di luce. Solo uno di loro danza. Poi, accompagnati dallo stesso Taoufiq Izeddiou, mentre il gruppo suona, uno a uno, tutti si esibiscono in danze dai ritmi tribali.
A spettacolo finito, restano alcune immagini molto suggestive e l’intensa interpretazione dei performer.
Hmadcha حمادشة. è uno spettacolo con una drammaturgia chiara, con uno sviluppo e una coerenza che lo rendono tra i migliori presentati quest’anno al Tanz im August Festival.
Hmadcha حمادشة. of Taoufiq Izeddiou
BERLIN – On August 22nd and 23rd at the Radyalsistem, as part of Tanz im August 2023, Taoufiq Izeddiou presented Hmadcha حمادشة.
The title of the show refers to the name of a seventeenth-century Sufi brotherhood. The Moroccan choreographer, inspired by the ascetic festivals of this sect, proposes a piece full of images and gestures halfway between the tribal and the mystical.
The piece begins with the sound of the sea and a man who, by moving his back sinuously, recalls the motion of the waves. When the percussions are added to the sound of the water, the performer begins to hop in a rhythmic and repetitive way, often changing fronts. At one point the movement becomes wider and seems to reproduce the steps of a fight. A short time later, one after the other, the next seven dancers gain the stage. At the left of the stage, a wall of light attracts the performers that approach it with their arms raised as if in a prayer. Then the waves break again and with them the movements of the 8 brothers also begin to diversify and in some moments they get together to obsessively repeat the same movement.
A change, which perhaps also symbolizes the liberation from religion and false beliefs, occurs when the music of an electric guitar transforms the dance into whirling turns that are performed first with the fingers intertwined and the arms stretched out in front of the chest and then with open hands and arms. The performers embrace each other repeatedly and, when Metamorphosis by Philip Glass begins, squares of light appear on the stage, inside which, the dancers position themselves with their hands palms facing upwards.
A moment follows in which the performers use their voices as if in a lament. Everyone walks backwards, with their backs to the wall of light. Only one of them dances. Then, accompanied by Taoufiq Izeddiou himself, while the group plays drums, one by one, every performer dances with tribal rhythms.
At the end of the show, some very suggestive images and the intense interpretation of the performers remains engraved in memory.
Hmadcha حمادشة. it is a show with a clear dramaturgy, with a development and coherence that make it one of the best presented this year at the Tanz im August Festival.
