BERLINO – Dal 13 al 15 ottobre 2023, presso l’Haus der Berliner Festspiele, è andato in scena Put your heart under your feet… and walk! di Steven Cohen. Lo spettacolo verte interamente sulla morte e sui rituali per elaborare la perdita di una persona cara. Il coreografo e performer sudafricano considera il teatro come un tempio ed è proprio sul palco, davanti al pubblico, che ‘celebra’ la morte del suo compagno.
Sin dall’inizio, si alternano immagini proiettate sul fondale e azioni performative dal vivo. L’artista fa il suo ingresso in scena su una sorta di trampoli a forma di bara. Con andatura lenta e incerta, cerca di schivare le numerose scarpette da ballo poste in una geometria perfetta sul palco. Ogni scarpetta rappresenta un simbolo profano o religioso,un’installazione artistica a sé stante. Tra le tante, ce n’è una con un crocifisso, un’altra con gli uncini di una svastica, una con un cuore e moltissime altre con particolari decorazioni.
Raggiunto il proscenio, le luci si abbassano e riprende la proiezione. Questa volta le immagini lo vedono in un mattatoio. Ma se le prime scene sono giocate sul contrasto tra la sua figura eterea e il luogo di morte, le immagini che seguono, dopo che Cohen fa suonare quattro giradischi nella solita alternanza video/performance, lo vedono in tutù bianco muoversi in una vasca piena del sangue che scola dalla carcassa di un bue. A questo punto una buona parte del pubblico lascia la sala.
Per chi resta, non sono finite le sorprese… Raggiunta una scrivania piena di candelabri, Cohen recita le preghiere per lo Shabbat, comprese quelle per il vino e il pane, e, dopo aver inquadrato con una micro telecamera la sua cavità orale e l’incisione di un’urna funeraria, prende un cucchiaio di ceneri e le ingoia, per diventare la bara della persona amata e restare con essa unito per sempre. Ancora più persone lasciano il teatro. Lo spettacolo finisce mentre Cohen sparisce inghiottito da una nube di fumo.
Pochi applausi per l’artista che neanche rientra in scena. Put your heart under your feet… and walk! è uno spettacolo provocatorio, per il suo modo di affrontare un argomento tabù, e dai contenuti molto forti. Sicuramente è una performance che non lascia indifferenti gli spettatori. Ma a parte giudizi e sensibilità personali su temi tanto delicati, non si può non riconoscere a Cohen il coraggio di esporsi e di esibirsi in una maniera sincera e vulnerabile.
BERLIN – From October 13th to 15th, 2023, at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Put your heart under your feet… and walk! by Steven Cohen was on. Put your heart under your feet… and walk! focuses entirely on death and the rituals needed to grieve the death of a loved one. The South African choreographer and performer Steven Cohen considers the theatre a modern day temple and uses the stage and the audience to process the loss of his partner. From the beginning, video images projected onto the backdrop alternate with live performance. The artist makes his stage entrance in thick heels on top of stilts formed from baby-size coffins. With slow and uncertain steps, he maneuvers the numerous pointe shoes placed in perfect geometry on the stage. Each shoe represents a profane or religious symbol, an artistic installation in its own right. Among the many, there is a crucifix, another with a swastika, and one with a heart. When he reaches the proscenium, the lights darken and the projection resumes. This time the images show Cohen in a slaughterhouse. But if the first scenes play on the contrast between his ethereal figure and the place of death, the images that follow — after Cohen hoists and plays four turntables in the usual video/performance alternation – show
him in a white tutu moving in a tub full of the blood that drips from the recently slaughtered cattle. At this point a segment of the audience leaves the room. For those who remain, the surprises are not over. Having reached a desk full of candelabra, Cohen recites the prayers for Shabbat, including for the wine and bread, and uses a micro camera to project the inside of his mouth and the engraving of a funerary urn on the desk. He then takes a spoonful of ashes from the urn and washes them down with wine to become the grave of his loved one and remain united forever. After this, even more people leave the theatre. The show concludes with Cohen disappearing into a cloud of smoke that enveloped the stage. Very little and unsure applause for the artist who doesn’t even return on stage. Put your heart under your feet… and walk! is a provocative show, for its way of tackling taboos, and with very strong content. Definitely a performance that doesn’t leave the audience unmoved. But aside from personal beliefs and sensitivities on such delicate topics, one cannot fail to recognize Cohen’s courage to expose himself and perform in a sincere and vulnerable manner.
