BERLINO – Dal 2 al 5 marzo 2023, presso gli Uferstudios Berlin, Sebastian Abarbanell ha presentato la sua nuova produzione Home.
Come il titolo suggerisce, si tratta di una performance intimista, dal sapore biografico, che ci apre una finestra sul mondo del giovane artista.
Mentre il pubblico entra in sala, su un enorme schermo è proiettata l’immagine di una gabbia toracica che si alza e si abbassa seguendo il ritmo del respiro. Quando tutti hanno preso posto, Sebastian cammina verso un alto piedistallo e, sostenendo tutto il peso del corpo su una sola gamba, una volta salito sul cubo, inizia a muoversi con movimenti lenti, che ricordano la danza giapponese butoh, mantenendo sempre le spalle al pubblico.
Sin da subito, risalta l’importanza del corpo e la sua estetica.
Man mano il movimento acquista fluidità e ritmo, alleggerendo la sensazione di fatica che si avverte inizialmente. Quando Sebastian scende dal piedistallo, il solo continua attraverso pose plastiche che ricordano alcune posizioni dello yoga o di arti marziali, ma grazie alla grande padronanza con cui muove il suo corpo, tutti i passaggi risultano armoniosi.
Braccia e gambe sembrano un’eco della musica.
Se nella prima parte si avverte lo sforzo di contenere il movimento in gesti calibrati e la sofferenza di costringere il corpo in posizioni scomode, nella seconda parte si assiste a una progressiva liberazione che conduce l’artista a movimenti più ariosi e ampi, fino raggiungere l’acme in una catartica danza techno.
Sebbene alcune parti siano più lunghe del necessario e ci siano un paio di momenti un po’ didascalici (come la scena del vestito), lo spettacolo è interessante e si segue con attenzione dall’inizio alla fine. Non solo, infatti, è molto bello e personale il movimento del corpo di Sebastian Abarbanell, ma è forte e chiaro il messaggio del suo spettacolo, che denuncia la tendenza di incasellare e mettere etichette alle persone.
Come Home rappresenta perfettamente, la personalità di ognuno è molto più complessa e sfaccettata di una generica definizione. Sebastian Abarbanell lo dimostra benissimo lasciandoci intravedere diversi aspetti della sua anima.
From the 2nd to the 5th of March 2023, at the Uferstudios Berlin, Sebastian Abarbanell presented his new production Home.
As the title suggests, Home is an intimate performance, with a biographical flavour, which opens a window into the world of the young artist.
As the audience enters the studio, the image of a rib cage that expands and contracts following the breath rhythm is projected on a huge screen wall. When everyone has taken their seats, Sebastian walks towards a high pedestal and, supporting all the weight of the body on one leg, climbs the cube and with slow movements, that remind of the Japanese Butoh dance, he begins to move, always keeping his back to the audience.
Right from the start, the importance of the body and its aesthetics stands out.
Once the movement acquires fluidity and rhythm, the feeling of fatigue, that is initially felt, starts to lighten up.
When he is off the pedestal, the solo continues through plastic poses that recall some yoga or martial arts positions, but thanks to the great mastery with which Sebastian moves his body, all the passages are harmonious.
Arms and legs look like an echo of the music.
If in the first part the audience can perceive his effort to contain the movement in calibrated gestures and his suffering to force the body into awkward positions, in the second part, witnesses a progressive liberation that leads the artist to more airy and wide movements, until he reaches the climax in a cathartic techno dance.
Although some parts are longer than necessary and there are a couple of didactic moments, the show is interesting and catches the attention from beginning to end. In fact, not only Sebastian Abarbanell’s movement is very beautiful and unique, but the message of his performance, which denounces the tendency to put labels on people, is strong and clear.
As Home perfectly represents, everyone’s personality is much more complex and multifaceted than a generic definition. Sebastian Abarbanell demonstrates it very well by letting us glimpse different aspects of his soul.
