BERLINO – Nella trentunesima edizione di Tanz im August, grande spazio è riservato alla famosa coreografa statunitense Deborah Hay – tra i maggiori rappresentanti della post modern dance – alla quale è dedicata una retrospettiva intitolata RE-Perspective Deborah Hay: Works from 1968 to the Present.
Oltre ai suoi lavori dal 60’ ad oggi, la retrospettiva include anche installazioni multimediali e due nuove prime mondiali.
Il 9 e l’11 agosto, presso l’HAU 1 (Hebbel am Ufer), sono stati presentati al pubblico per la prima volta: Animals on the Beach & My choreographed body … revisited (2019).
La serata inizia con il solo dell’artista che, continuando una ricerca iniziata da più di cinquant’anni, esplora le possibilità di movimento del suo corpo accompagnata, a tratti, dalla sua voce.
Senza interruzioni, quando la coreografa lascia il palco, entrano cinque danzatori che, senza musica, si esibiscono su un palco vuoto, privo di scenografia.
In realtà, durante l’intera durata del pezzo, non accade molto. Eccezion fatta per alcuni momenti in cui l’attenzione dei performers si dirige verso ‘l’esterno’ (un rumore assordante rompe il silenzio o il passaggio di qualcosa sopra le loro teste li spinge ad alzare lo sguardo), per il resto non c’è interazione fisica tra loro ma soltanto la condivisione dello stesso spazio e del momento creativo.
Lo spettacolo, prescindendo dall’esibizione in sé, è un perfetto esempio del lavoro della Hay, la quale, lavorando con danzatori ma anche con non danzatori, ha dedicato l’intera carriera allo studio e alla ricerca del movimento.

In Tanz im August 31st edition, great space is reserved to the famous American choreographer Deborah Hay – one of the major representatives of post-modern dance. The Festival dedicated to her is a retrospective entitled RE-Perspective Deborah Hay: Works from 1968 to the Present.
In addition to her works from the 60’ till today, the retrospective also includes multimedia installations and two new world premieres.
On August 9th and 11th, at the HAU 1 (Hebbel am Ufer), Animals on the Beach & My choreographed body … revisited (2019) were presented to the public for the first time.
The evening begins with the solo of the artist who, continuing a research begun more than fifty years ago, explores the possibilities of her body movements, accompanied herself, at times, by her voice.
Without interruptions, when the choreographer leaves the stage, five dancers step in. Without music, they perform on an empty stage, with no set design.
During the entire duration of the piece, not much happens. Except for some moments in which the attention of the performers is directed towards ‘the outside’ (a deafening noise breaks the silence or the passing of something above their heads urges them to look up), for the rest there isn’t physical interaction between them but only sharing the same space and the same creative moment.
The show, regardless of the result of the exhibition itself, is a perfect example of Hay’s work. Working with dancers but also with non-dancers, she dedicated her entire career to studying and searching for movement.
