Il 17 e il 18 agosto 2022, nell’ambito della trentaquattresima edizione di Tanz im August, è andato in scena We wear our wheels with pride… di Robyn Orlin con i City Theater & Dance Group
BERLINO – Lo spettacolo inizia nel foyer del teatro. I City Theatre & Dance Group entrano nel Volksbühne suonando trombe e ballando tra le persone dirette in sala. Per chi ha già preso posto è possibile seguire la scena sul fondale dello scenario.
Sin dal primo istante, quindi, è chiaro che non c’è nessuna distanza tra gli artisti e il loro pubblico.
Una volta sul palco, dopo una divertente gag sulle luci di sala, i componenti della compagnia si presentano nel loro modo colorito e coinvolgente. Quando Anelisa Stuurman inizia a cantare con la sua bellissima voce acuta e graffiante, si entra nel vivo dello spettacolo. Srotolando una striscia di linoleum, al centro del palco, la vocalist forma un rettangolo bianco che, ripreso frontalmente e dall’alto, viene proiettato sul fondale. Mentre tutti camminano lungo il suo perimetro, ad uno ad uno i performer vanno al centro di questo spazio e, come in una battle di hip hop, si esibiscono dando prova ognuno delle proprie abilità.
Il pubblico diventa parte attiva della performance
A questo punto i City Theatre & Dance Group prima invitano il pubblico a cantare con loro, poi anche a muovere il proprio busto in avanti ie poi indietro. L’atmosfera diventa di festa, sono tutti coinvolti e partecipi. Sempre seguendo la stessa ‘struttura’, prima dondolandosi su un’asta ferma a mezz’aria decorata da lattine colorate, poi mettendo ognuno la propria maschera sotto l’occhio della telecamera, uno alla volta si esibiscono tutti i performer.
Più che la coreografia o l’architettura dello spettacolo, la forza di We wear our wheels with pride… è senz’altro l’energia degli artisti sul palco, il loro modo di coinvolgere e trascinare il pubblico in un mondo colorato fatto di musica e danza.

BERLIN – The show begins in the foyer of the theatre. The City Theater & Dance Group enters the Volksbühne playing trumpets and dancing among the people heading into the hall. For those who have already taken their seats, it’s possible to follow the scene on the scenario’s backdrop.
From the very first moment it’s clear that there is no distance between the artists and their audience.
Once on stage, after a funny gag about the hall’s lights, the company members present themselves in their colourful and engaging way. When Anelisa Stuurman starts singing with her beautiful high-pitched, scratchy voice, she brings the show right to its heart. By unrolling a strip of linoleum in the center of the stage, the vocalist forms a white rectangle which, shot from the front and from above, is projected onto the backdrop. While everyone walks along its perimeter, one by one the performers go to the center of this space and, like in a hip hop’s battle, they perform, proving each of their skills.
The audience becomes an active part of the performance
At this point the City Theater & Dance Group first invites the audience to sing with them, then also to move their torso forward and then backward. The atmosphere becomes a party, everyone is involved and participates. Always following the same ‘structure’, first by swinging on a pole decorated with colored cans and fixed in mid-air, then each one putting their own mask under the eye of the camera; all the performers dance one at a time.
