BERLINO – Da giovedì 23 a domenica 26 settembre presso il Dock 11 è andato in scena Requiem – Mangongkal Holi del danzatore e coreografo Ruben Reniers.
Sebbene Reniers sia cresciuto in Olanda, le sue origini indonesiane lo hanno spinto a esplorare la cultura della meravigliosa isola a metà strada tra il Sud est asiatico e l’Oceania. Il suo pezzo, presentato in anteprima al Dock 11, è esattamente un tributo alla sua terra nonché il congedo dal padre, perso di recente.
Il rituale funebre
Quando il pubblico entra in sala, la musica, eseguita dal vivo da Konstantin Heuer, Bilawa Respati e Biliana Voutchkova, già accompagna il rituale funebre che i danzatori sono impegnati a eseguire. La ripetizione di questi piccoli gesti e l’incalzante ritmo delle percussioni sembrano trasportare i performer in una sorta di trance che genera singole esplosioni tradotte in una danza ancestrale e cerimoniale.
Il rituale dei fazzoletti
Mentre si susseguono i soli, si assiste a un’altra affascinante ‘funzione’ che consiste nel piegare dei fazzoletti bianchi con movimenti precisi e calibrati. Quando la danza ipnotica e coinvolgente della bravissima Annapaola Leso, che guida e trascina il gruppo dando spessore al lavoro, attira gli altri danzatori al centro dello spazio performativo, l’atmosfera cambia e la magia del rituale si perde: tutti iniziano a eseguire gli stessi passi con fronti e tempi diversi.
Il finale
Seguono altre immagini, come il passaggio delle ombre o dell’incisione di quadrati di vetro verniciati, forse non sempre necessarie. Poi tornano le stesse movenze della piegatura dei fazzoletti, ma questa volta si trasformano in un duo. Dopo il solo di Sean Roel Nederlof, segue il momento finale, in cui, come nella ciclicità di tutte le cose, si ripete il rito iniziale.
Requiem – Mangongkal Holi è una coreografia ‘emotiva’, non sempre a fuoco, a volte un po’ ridondante, ma che consente un viaggio intenso tra la luce e le tenebre, tra la vita e la morte. Una coreografia commemorativa e celebrativa che trasporta lo spettatore in un luogo remoto e in un tempo altro, allo stesso tempo fuori e dentro di sé.

From Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th September, Dock 11 showcased Requiem – Mangongkal Holi by the dancer and choreographer Ruben Reniers.
Although Reniers grew up in the Netherlands, his Indonesian origins prompted him to explore the culture of the wonderful islands halfway between Southeast Asia and Oceania. His piece, which premiered at Dock 11, is an open tribute to his homeland as well as a farewell to his father who recently passed away.
The funeral ritual
When the audience enters the hall, the music, performed live by Konstantin Heuer, Bilawa Respati and Biliana Voutchkova, already accompanies the funeral ritual that the dancers perform. The repetition of these small gestures and the pressing rhythm of the percussion seem to transport them into a sort of trance that generates individual explosions translated into an ancestral and ceremonial dance.
The ritual of folding of the handkerchiefs
Whilst the solos follow on from one another, we witness another fascinating ‘function’ which consists in folding white handkerchiefs with precise and calibrated movements. When the hypnotic and engaging dance of the talented Annapaola Leso – who leads and drags the group giving depth to the work – attracts the other dancers to the center of the performance space, the atmosphere changes and the magic of the ritual is lost: everyone begins to perform the same steps with different directions, speed and quality.
The final
Other suggestive images follow, such as the passage of shadows or the engraving of painted glass squares, which are perhaps not always necessary. Then the same movements of the folding of the handkerchiefs return, but this time they become part of a duo. After the solo by Sean Roel Nederlof, the final moment follows, in which, as in the cyclical nature of all things, the initial rite is repeated.
Requiem – Mangongkal Holi is an ‘emotional’ choreography, not always in focus, sometimes a little redundant, but which allows for an intense journey between light and darkness, between life and death. A commemorative and celebratory choreography that transports the audience to a remote place and another time, both inside and outside of us at the same time.
