BERLINO – Dall’11 al 20 agosto presso Tempelhoferfeld, un vecchio aeroporto militare, si svolge il Berlin Circus Festival. Come ogni anno, la line up degli artisti è strepitosa e il livello degli spettacoli molto alto.
Dall’11 al 17, nella tenda piccola è in scena BITBYBIT, una collaborazione di Collectif Malunés & MOVEDBYMATTER (FR/BE).
Una lunga tavola di legno sospesa in aria attraversa lo spazio performativo da un lato all’ altro. In un precario equilibrio, due uomini sono posizionati alle opposte estremità della tavola. Con l’ausilio di funi, ganci e carrucole, a cui sono assicurati, grazie all’equilibrio delle forze in opposizione, riescono a piegare i loro corpi fino a raggiungere l’inclinazione di un angolo acuto. La gravità è lo strumento che usano per la loro magia, ed è anche ciò che mantiene il rischio costante e l’adrenalina alta.
In perfetta simmetria, i due protagonisti si guardano negli occhi con intensità e connessione. Esplorano diverse possibilità di equilibrio reggendosi a una corda legata al muro, ma l’attrazione verso il centro della tavola è sempre più forte. Devono avvicinarsi. Così, si liberano dalla fune e
mordono saldamente ognuno l’estremità opposta di una corda che li unirà per il resto dello spettacolo. Giocano e sperimentano in continuazione nuove forme di ‘bilance’ per avvicinarsi sempre di più. La loro forza mascellare lascia il pubblico attonito. Aumentando sempre di più il livello di rischio, sfidano equilibri apparentemente impossibili, ruotano, si inarcano e saltano. I due performer ingaggiano un duello che aumenta l’intensità della loro relazione che sembra quasi erotica. Anche la corda diventa sempre più piccola suscitando l’eccitazione del pubblico che vede i loro volti sempre più vicini. Durante questo confronto si assiste a un momento in cui entrambi pendono dall’alto, ognuno mantenendo salda, sempre con i denti, la presa alla fune. All’improvviso uno di loro lascia andare la corda mentre l’altro, sfidando le leggi fisiche, mantiene la sua posizione senza alcun peso che l’aiuti a restare in equilibrio, come se fosse congelato nell’aria.
Ad un certo punto, uno dei due acrobati, con il volto e gli occhi spaventati, raggiunge la struttura più alta della tenda attraverso una gag che diverte molto il pubblico. Il suo compagno, infatti, nel tentativo di aiutarlo, si arrampica a una microscopica scala di corda ma, mentre sale, perde l’appoggio e resta aggrappato alle gambe dell’alto. Il pubblico trattiene il fiato. Si avverte l’alto rischio che i due stanno vivendo e il pericolo sembra essere reale.
Alla fine, per il sollievo di tutti, riescono a tornare sulla tavola, ma nell’ impresa finiscono con le labbra dell’uno incollate a quelle dell’altro. Tutti nella tenda festeggiano il bacio degli innamorati, che, dopo tutta la tensione e gli ostacoli superati, finalmente riescono a unirsi. Questo bacio dura a lungo. Senza perdere il contatto, infatti, si esibiscono in una coreografia rituale che consiste in un costante movimento delle braccia. La luce si spegne mentre continuano a ‘danzare’ al culmine del loro amore.
BITBYBIT, nel suo genere, rappresenta un’eccellenza. A parte le acrobazie e i virtuosismi a cui si assiste, c’è una storia che sostiene il pezzo e una coreografia molto ben curata. Anche quest’anno il Berlin Circus Festival non delude le aspettative dei suoi spettatori
Lovers kiss
BERLIN – The Berlin Circus Festival is on from the 11th to the 20th of August in the Tempelhoferfeld, a very special place because it is an old airport, with a lot of air and space. As every year, the line up of artists is amazing and the level of the shows high.
From the 11th to the 17th, BITBYBIT, a collaboration of Collectif Malunés & MOVEDBYMATTER (FR/BE), takes place in the Petit tent.
A long wooden plank in the air crosses the arena from side to side. In balance, two men pend from the wall of each side, in diagonal angles, with the help of ropes, hooks and pulleys. Their bodies reach the diagonal angles thanks to the balance of the forces in opposition. Gravity is the tool that they use to do their magic, and is also gravity what have them kept in constant risk, and the audience, with high adrenaline, in constant surprise.
In great symmetry, the scene starts with these two characters that look into each others’ eyes with intensity and connection. They explore different games of balance with the rope tied in the wall, but the attraction to the center of the plank is harder and harder. They need to get close. So, from the distance they tie to each other and, for this venture, they decide to stick into their mouths a bite with a hook that is secured to the line of rope that will join them for the rest of the show. They play with the different possibilities to use equilibrium and the rope to get closer and closer. We are amazed immediately with their jaw strength. Always increasing the level of risk, we are happy every time the characters manage to do impossible equilibriums, spinning, arching and jumping. The characters start to have a duel that increases the intensity of their relationship that feels almost erotic. The rope also becomes smaller and smaller bringing up the excitement in the audience because of the proximity of their faces. Suddenly, in the middle of all this confrontation, when the two characters reach a moment in which they both pend to each other; one of them, lets the line go and defying physic laws, the other body holds the position in equilibrium without any weight that helps the balance, just frozen in the air.
At some point, one of the characters ends up in the higher structure of the tent in a funny clown episode and he is so afraid, that the other character wants to help, so he ties a rope ladder to go get him, and while he climbs, the ladder falls but his partner manages to help him in very improbable ways.The audience holds their breath. We all feel the high risk that they are living, and it feels very real.
Finally, after all the problems and adventures, for the relief of everybody, to get down from the heights, they “coincidentally” end up lips with lips floating back to the plank. Everyone in the tent celebrates the kiss of the lovers, that after all the tension that they had to live, manage to join in the end. This kiss lasts still a while and we can see how their connection is stronger while they make a ritual choreography with their arms, holding equilibrium extremely close to each other, and the light goes out while they continue to the climax of their love.
BITBYBIT, of its kind, represents excellence. Aside from the acrobatics and virtuosity witnessed, there is a story that underpins the piece and a very well done choreography. Also this year the Berlin Circus Festival doesn’t disappoint the expectations of its audience.
