BERLINO – Dal 15 al 19 gennaio, presso l’Haus der Berliner Festspiele, la Gauthier Dance presenta Classy Classics:
William Forsythe, Herman Schmerman Duet / Eric Gauthier, Orchestra of Wolves / Marco Goecke, Äffi / Ohad Naharin, DECADANCE / Cayetano Soto, Malasangre
Nonostante il titolo ironico, non ci si deve aspettare una sontuosa serata di balletto!Classy Classics è una celebrazione della danza contemporanea, che combina tre capolavori di coreografi stellari (William Forsythe, Ohad Naharin e Cayetano Soto) con due pezzi tra i favoriti del repertorio di danza Gauthier (firmati da Eric Gauthier e Marco Goecke).
Il balletto moderno è indissolubilmente legato al nome di William Forsythe: per diversi decenni, l’eleganza e le linee chiare della sua imponente opera hanno arricchito la danza contemporanea. Allo stesso tempo, il Herman Schmerman Duet è la migliore dimostrazione di quanta leggerezza e umorismo possa raggiungere nei lavori, quasi matematicamente strutturati di Forsythe. Una danzatrice con le scarpe da punta e il suo partner sembrano inizialmente pronti per un pas de deux neoclassico. Ma a Forsythe bastano pochi minuti per rompere ironicamente gli schemi e raccontare la storia di una relazione in chiave contemporanea. Spiritoso, rilassato – e incredibilmente virtuosistico. Il Herman Schmerman Duet era il pezzo forte della grande Sylvie Guillem, ma ora è presentato raramente sui palcoscenici di tutto il mondo. La Gauthier Dance è onorata che Forsythe abbia dato il via libera per includere il suo duetto nel programma Classy Classics.
Dopo diverse collaborazioni di successo, i tempi erano maturi per una partnership ufficiale: da gennaio 2019, Marco Goecke è stato associato a Gauthier Dance come artista residente. È quindi logico che il tanto ricercato coreografo faccia parte della formazione Classy Classics. È rappresentato dalla produzione che ha segnato la sua svolta e ha reso noto a un vasto pubblico il suo inconfondibile linguaggio di danza vibrante. Nell’ambito del programma, Äffi non rappresenta solo la posizione solista. È anche una scelta estremamente sicura. Dopotutto, il pezzo senza fiato messo in musica da Johnny Cash richiede tutto dal suo esecutore, sia tecnicamente che emotivamente.
DECADANCE è l’ultima borsa a sorpresa. Non un pezzo ma un work-in-progress in continua evoluzione. Come se stesse girando un caleidoscopio, Ohad Naharin compone , per ogni città, per ogni compagnia, una nuova versione tutti gli estratti delle sue opere precedenti. E questo è un gran lavoro considerando che la versione originale è stata presentata per la prima volta nel 2000. Ora Naharin ha creato un arrangiamento DECADANCE per la Gauthier Dance! Un segno di apprezzamento che non è una coincidenza. Dopo Kamuyot e Minus 16, DECADANCE è già la terza opportunità per il coreografo della compagnia di ballo Batsheva, il famoso “Mr. Gaga“, per valutare in prima persona la qualità della compagnia.
Malasangre è un pezzo vorticoso. Vestiti con gonne corte, le mani modellate in artigli, i ballerini si trascinano su un palcoscenico coperto di farfalle di tessuto nero. L’omaggio profondamente sentito di Cayetano Soto alla cantante cubana La Lupe mostra l’oscurità di un’anima tormentata, trasformando allo stesso tempo questo conflitto interiore nella fonte della più grande energia possibile. In combinazione con la musica radiosa della Regina dell’Anima Latina, questa eccentrica e febbrile rivista spazza via letteralmente il pubblico. Presentato nel 2013 come parte della serata Future 6, era giunto il momento per un riproporlo.
La tanto amata commedia in miniatura Orchestra of Wolves risale ancora più lontano. Oggi è difficile immaginare che, nel 2009, Eric Gauthier abbia creato lo scontro divertente tra un direttore sfortunato e la sua orchestra per una compagnia di soli otto ballerini. Ai suoni martellanti del noto primo movimento della quinta “Sinfonia del destino” di Beethoven, i musicisti in maschere da lupo circondano il loro sfortunato preside.

In spite of the tongue-in-cheek title, one should not expect a lavish ballet evening! Classy Classics is a celebration of contemporary dance, combining three masterpieces by star choreographers with two favourites from the Gauthier dance repertoire.
Modern ballet is inseparably linked with the name of William Forsythe: For several decades, the elegance and clear lines of his impressive oeuvre have enriched contemporary dance. At the same time, the Herman Schmerman Duet is the best proof of how much lightness and humour there is in Forsythe’s accomplished, almost mathematically structured works. A dancer in pointe shoes and her male partner initially seem to be all set for a neoclassical pas de deux. But it takes Forsythe only a few minutes to ironically break the familiar patterns and tell the story of a very contemporary relationship. Witty, laid-back – and incredibly virtuosic. The Herman Schmerman Duet used to be the showpiece of the great Sylvie Guillem but is now rarely seen on dance stages around the world. Gauthier Dance is honoured that Forsythe has given the go-ahead to include his duet in the Classy Classics programme.
After several succesful collaborations, the time was ripe for an official partnership: From January 2019, Marco Goecke has been associated with Gauthier Dance as Artist-in-Residence. It is thus only logical that the much sought-after choreographer is part of the Classy Classics line-up. He is represented by the production that marked his breakthrough and made his unmistakable, quivering dance idiom known to a broad audience. Within the framework of the programme, Äffi does not only stand for the solo position. It is also a supremely confident choice. After all, the breathless piece set to music by Johnny Cash demands everything from its performer, both technically and emotionally.
DECADANCE is the ultimate surprise bag. Not a piece but a constantly changing work-in-progress. As if he was turning a kaleidoscope, Ohad Naharin compiles a new version for each city, for each company, all excerpts from his previous works. And that’s a lot since the original version was premiered in 2000. Now he has created a DECADANCE arrangement for Gauthier Dance! A sign of appreciation that is no coincidence. Following Kamuyot and Minus 16, DECADANCE was already the third opportunity for the House Choreographer of the Batsheva Dance Company and world-famous „Mr. Gaga“ to appraise the company’s quality first-hand.
Full attack: Malasangre is a whirlwind of a piece. Dressed in short skirts, their hands shaped into claws, the dancers are sweeping over a stage covered with black fabric butterflies. Cayetano Soto’s deeply felt homage to the Cuban singer La Lupe shows the darkness of a tormented soul, at the same time turning this inner conflict into the source of the greatest possible energy. In combination with the radiant music of the Queen of Latin Soul, this eccentric, feverish revue literally blows the audience away. Premiered in 2013 as part of the ballet evening Future 6, it was high time for a revival.
The much-loved miniature comedy Orchestra of Wolves dates back even further. Today it is hard to imagine that, in 2009, Eric Gauthier created the humorous showdown between a hapless conductor and his orchestra for a company of just eight dancers. To the pounding sounds from the well-known first movement of Beethoven’s 5th „Symphony of Fate“, the musicians in wolf masks encircle their hapless principal.
