It is during the 2015 Expat Expo- A showcase of Wahlberliner that Daniela Lucato had the possibility to create and present her latest work “Connecting Fingers”.

The choreography takes inspiration from the life of several refugees that live in camps in Germany. After interviewing them to understand what it actually means to be a refugee, and what’s the emotion anald social baggage that comes with it, she decided to transform these incredible, and sometimes sad stories, into dance and movement.

Daniela Lucato decided to work with four dancers. They are all quite mature in age and this definitely brought a great depth to her choreography that needs a complete dedication considering how hard it is to express in movements the heartbreaking stories that she chose to work with.

The movements are soft, long, precise and the dancers execute them with an incredible maturity and sensitivity. Beautiful is to see how the performers maintain their own identity and qualities while the choreography reveals itself. The three females and one male dancer, move together or separately, but they always appear to be connected by an imaginary string. Duets, solos and group parts are only some of the elements used in “Connecting Fingers” to stimulate the audiences’s fantasy and imagination. Throughout the show we can hear also the refugees’ real voice that explain the life events, sometimes tragic, that brought them to take the decision to leave their homes and move to Germany.

The choreography continues alternating slow and fast parts, this helps the audience to stay alert and interested to what it is presented to us on stage. The slow parts are delicate, rich in details and emotions. The fast parts are instead full of energies and dynamics, the movements become bigger, the performers travel across the floor with big weight shifts and powerful steps. “Connecting Fingers”  is an incredible journey to witness and it is a pleasure to watch. Dance, music, and even singing at moments, merge together to create something really magical. It is a very subtle and delicate choreography, just like these refugees’ life that left their homes hoping to find a better future for themselves and the ones they love.
